If you checked out my June Birchbox, or any of my Birchbox posts, then you already have an idea of what Ipsy is: a monthly beauty sample service. Every month, Ipsy sends you an adorable cosmetic bag with 5 beauty samples in it based on your personal beauty profile. So how is it different from Birchbox? All of the products sent in Ipsy bags are chosen by celebrity makeup artists, and each month you can get coupons & deals on the products (even if you didn’t get it in your bag).
So why do I like Ipsy more? Because a) the products they expose you to are generally less expensive, b) the samples you get in your bag are much bigger and often even full-sized, and c) I always get more makeup in my Ipsy bag than I do in my Birchbox.
From left: Laneige BB Cushion; NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel; Marc Anthony Dream Waves beach spray; Nicka K New York shimmer eyeliner (green); Be a Bombshell Lash Out mascara
I was very confused by the BB cushion until I opened it; it’s a little tub with a sponge in it, and the sponge is full of the product; you press the pad that comes with it into the sponge to get the product onto the pad, and then you apply it to your skin with the pad. And you know, I’ve gotten over BB creams, to be honest. For me, they’re just a useless product. I will always want more coverage than it will give me. But this BB cushion actually made my skin look really good! I’m sure if I’d been resourceful I would have gotten more than one use out of it, but I didn’t, and I put foundation on top of it, so honestly I don’t know how it does over the course of the day. But I would definitely buy this product!
I’ve been a NYX butter gloss fan for a while, so this was a nice treat in my bag. The one I already have is a much pinker color (I have Eclair), and this is more coral, which is perfect for summer time. Plus, I loved the way this color went with the green shimmer eyeliner! There’s not much to say other than I love Butter Gloss.
I haven’t used the Marc Anthony Dream Waves beach spray because I have not even the slightest bit of wave or curl in my hair; all it would do is gunk up my hair. Womp.
I really like the shimmer eyeliner a lot, though I wish the brush were more of a brush. It’s a little stiff. The color is gorgeous, but the brush is stiff enough that if you go over the line while it’s still wet, it will pull color off; a second coat means you need to wait for it to dry first. Still, I love to have a pop of color on the eyes in the summer so this was perfect.
Last but least is Be a Bombshell Lash Out mascara. You know me and my lashes… I’m always trying new mascaras and looking for something amazing! While this isn’t an amazing mascara, it’s a pretty good one, and it rounded out the bag in a good way. It was fun feeling like I had almost an entire look in the bag.
If you’re thinking about subscribing to Birchbox or Ipsy and you’re not sure which to try, I would tell you to try Ipsy. I’m overall happier with my Ipsy bags every month, and I think they do a better job of really sticking to the answers you give on your profile.
Have you tried one of them already? What did you get this month!?

Birchbox is a monthly beauty box delivery service that gives you access to great products without the financial commitment. For $10 a month, Birchbox will send you a box of 4-6 beauty samples to play with, all of which you can purchase online in the Birchbox Shop. The items in your box are based on a personal profile and preferences. Each purchase gains you points, which can be redeemed for more amazing beauty products!
Birchbox has been disappointing me a little bit for the past few months. I’m a makeup hoarder, and I can’t seem to get them to send me quite enough makeup for my liking. Despite having changed the settings on my profile, I still receive a lot of skincare, perfume, and for some reason, tea. I do not like tea.
This month, though, I’m pretty pleased with my Birchbox! I don’t know if it’s a better box than usual, or if I’m just in a more open mood this month… either way, I’m enjoying it. Here’s the rundown.
From left in photo: Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream; English Laundry Signature for Her perfume;  Coastal Scents Revealed 2 palette sampler; Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum; Laqa & Co. Lip Lube in Menatour
I have generally crappy-looking legs due to very dry skin and vericose veins; the BB body lotion was quite intriguing for me, since I’ve tried Sally Hansen’s airbrush legs with a lot of disappointment (it was too pigmented and splotchy). I’ve even put actual makeup on my legs. I was hoping the BB lotion would have a more subtle effect, but unfortunately it was a little too subtle. I enjoyed it as a lotion, though, and others may notice more of a difference!
I typically hate getting fragrances in my Birchbox because I don’t typically wear perfume, and when I do, it’s one of the two I already own (fresh Sugar eau de parfum or Oiseau eau de toilette in Flaming June). But for some reason I was feeling open to trying something new, and I spritzed on the English Laundry perfume the other day. I loved it! It’s definitely more perfumey (not a word) than the ones I already have, which I tend to stay away from, but I actually did like the smell of it.
I’m not one for overly shimmery shadows, but as they are pretty neutral, I was very pleased with the Coastal Scents shadows! I applied the lightest color on the inside corner and under the brow, the next lightest in the center of the lid, the darkest shimmery color on the outside corner, and the dark brown (which is matte) along the lashline as eyeliner. I thought they were gorgeous! Perfectly neutral and breezy for summer time.
I’m pretty picky about my skincare right now as I’ve been working with specific products recommended by my esthetician, so I haven’t tried the Caudalie serum yet,  but it sure does feel good on the back of my hand!
Last but not least, in fact probably my favorite, is the LAQA & Co. lip lube. I saw this on Birchbox’s facebook page as a possible item that might be in my box, and I was really hoping for it! At first I was disappointed when I pulled it out to find it was purple, but I decided to go for it anyway. I wear bright colors somewhat regularly, but purple is something I haven’t tried. I love this color! I also love that it’s sheer and moisturizing, so it’s not like you’re throwing on purple lipstick. An easy entrance into the world of purple lips.
Have you tried Birchbox yet? Go for it! You can pay month to month or you can pay for a year at once. Are you already a Birchbox member? What did you get in YOUR Birchbox?? Comment below!
